I had someone mention to me yesterday that they think that perhaps I am the only one who could have withstood this onslought for this great a time without being destroyed completely.

There was a payment made, whether you wish to understand that concept or not. That you eventually were released is not the issue, or that you think you won, which you do it seems, but that you made the fight for liberty.
