This is great! Someone contacted me yesterday. A new blog has been created and there is a project underway to expose corruption in the "County of Walworth" Wisconsin!!!!

A few days ago I asked Lana if it helped if we had the name of the case prosecutor so that we could contact him. Have not heard if this is anything that you would want at this time. Just let us know! A good number of letters to him/her along with this new site will let the Bastards know that they are being watched very closley. More crimes are committed when no one is paying attention. Just could make them think twice and do the right thing ............ like throw the case out

I am so tried of the way they take up court time with frivilous cases!!!! Seems like they take the law into their own hands and prosecute whether they have a valid case or not!

Journalist, Walworth County reach settlement

MILWAUKEE-An independent journalist suing Walworth County and two sheriff's department courthouse security officers for alleged civil rights violations agreed Monday to a settlement in U.S. District Court.

Terms of the settlement cannot be disclosed until after the county's insurance company-Wisconsin County Mutual-approves the agreement, said Michael Cotter, Walworth County deputy corporation counsel. A magistrate judge ordered all settlement documents submitted by Friday, May 11.

The case could go to trial if the insurance company's approval committee rejects the settlement, Cotter said.

In March 2005, D. Suzanne Shell, a journalist from Elbert, Colo., filed a civil rights complaint against Walworth County, Sgt. Tom Hausner and deputy Tom Jones. She alleged the officers wrongfully and forcibly arrested her for filming things inside the old Walworth County Courthouse in early 2003.

Shell was videotaping material for a documentary that included the story of a woman who was convicted of misdemeanor battery for an alleged severe spanking she gave her son.

Shell, 51, claims she asked for and received permission to film at the courthouse and claims Hausner and Jones wrongfully took her tape and used excessive force when arresting her for obstruction and disorderly conduct.

The county denied the allegations in a response to the complaint.

"All I can say is it's settled," said Charles Bohl, an attorney representing the county.

"The resolution is the best option for Walworth County," said Undersheriff Kurt Picknell.

"Any other information can be offered only after the settlement is approved."

Neither Shell nor her attorneys could be reached for comment.

Cotter said confidentiality clauses in the settlement would limit both sides' abilities to comment on the case. However, settlement amounts should be public record once the agreement is finalized because Walworth County is a public entity.

The only taxpayer-funded amount the county is liable for is the $50,000 insurance deductible, which was met through the county's defense of the case, Cotter said.

Both Hausner and Jones remain on the courthouse security staff.

Cotter said he doesn't believe the case damaged the officers' reputations.

MADISON, Wis. - A newspaper is accusing the Madison Police Department of violating the state's open records law by refusing to release disciplinary records involving a former officer who resigned.

The Wisconsin State Journal and investigative reporter Dee Hall filed a lawsuit in Dane County Circuit Court against the department Wednesday.

The newspaper, the second largest in Wisconsin, is seeking access to employment and disciplinary records involving former officer Meredyth Thompson.

The department, in response to an open records request filed by Hall, refused to release copies of complaints filed against Thompson by citizens and her colleagues on the force in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Facing termination for unspecified misconduct, Thompson resigned from the force.

The department also declined to release disciplinary recommendations and opinions of her supervisors or any information regarding "sensitive law enforcement investigative techniques."

In a statement, newspaper editor Ellen Foley said public access to records involving police and law enforcement officers is increasingly important.

"The Wisconsin State Journal will fight to keep our government records open for all citizens and to enable our journalism to fuel the solution-focused conversations that make Madison and Wisconsin so strong," she said.
